Down in the area on business so decided to go and take mooch around this vast & impressive site. I was surprised to see that so much of the equipment has already been removed & demolition of the larger more modern sheds is taking place at the rear of the complex.
I think I covered most of the site without getting too close to the security gates & was leaving the chimney gantry's till last until the torrential downpour that left me sitting on a wet car seat for the next 170 miles back home detered me somewhat!
    The pics;~

On top of the kilns with the vent cap thingies?

Also above the kilns, I guess this is where the the vent cap lifting chaps spent their idle time!

Each of the end kilns were linked to kilns on the other side

All of the rest rooms looked quite relaxing with 3 piece suites and more page 3 pinups than you could shake a stick at!

I was brought up around there, and went to school in the village.

The "vent caps" were actually used to feed the fires in the kilns with very small pieces of coal, which were know locally as "smudge".

The baking process took a week and during this time there was someone on top of the kiln, in the little hut.

There were a couple of temperature gauges that were monitored and when the temperature dropped the "fireman" would walk around and fill the kiln with smudge to keep the fire going.

30 years ago there were various brickworks around the local area, most have been demolished and Ridgemont is now the Amazon UK warehouse.

If anyone is going for another visit please PM me as I should love to go back and have a wander around.

By the way did anyone find the swimming pool in the complex ?

We used to go there once a week from the school for swimming lessons !
