Report - Stillingfleet Mine, Selby, December 2012

    After spending Christmas in Hull and a few days in Amsterdam myself and The Stig decided to check out a couple explores which took us to Selby mines. Two have now been taken over by offices/industrialised again, another being pulled down, Stillingfleet and Gascoigne are the last disused mines.

    We explored Stillingfleet but as we had left it quite late in the day ran out of light to do Gascoigne.

    Closed since 2004, the coal mine at Stillingfleet looks like a scene from a disaster movie, books, tools and even clothes left in place for years, with evidence of limited demolition and the odd spot of graffiti and vandalism. A large and eerie complex, the buildings at Stillingfleet bear resemblance to other mines on the troubled Selby Coalfield, which was long one of the major coal-producing areas in England but which, as with the majority of British mining, gradually declined in the late 20th century and is now entirely closed, with very few mines remaining in the area. Unfortunately we were unable to access the main building.
