Located in the city of Sunderland it's kind of in plain view, a bit eerie but apart from being attacked by the residential pigeons we enjoyed the mooch. Worth a look around. Unfortunately my camera was running low on battery so didn't have a chance to take many photos. I tell you some of the patients that came here could of been the next picasso, some pretty good work.
    History-
    The Art Studio, Sunderland

In 1986 Helix Arts - as Artists' Agency - initiated a residency for two artists to work with former psychiatric patients in Sunderland, linked to a successful residency programme at Cherry Knowle Hospital. Initially, artists Derek Hill and Chris Sell established an open access studio in central Sunderland, and sought out former patients of the hospital and people using associated services. The studio continued to thrive and in 1988 moved to larger premises in the city. Since 1991 the Studio has been independently run, recently with charity status. The management has strong user involvement and support from the local health authority and Social Services. In 2000 artists from Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside exhibited at the Baring Foundation in London. In 2001 a Lottery grant enabled the development of the studios to bring in a full-time manager and other artists to offer workshops in ceramics and IT. The studio has acted as a model for the setting up of a number of other art studios for good mental health, both within the region and in other parts of the UK.
