Hmmm I wasn't going to post this but I have had a lot of feedback about it on my Flickr, so here goes ::
Mods delete if you wish, it's a bit different =]

Bernat Klein was born in 1922 and is a textile designer and painter.
In 1962, Chanel chose Klein's fabrics for her spring collection, which lead to greater exposure and sales to Europe and USA and working for designers such as Dior and YSL.

Klein set up on his own in 1966 and based himself in the Scottish Borders.
He comissioned a studio building from the architect Peter Wormersley, who had previously designed Kleins house in the 1950's.

The Klein studio became the fifth most architecturally-influential building constructed in Scotland since the end of the Second World War. It also has an A-class listing from Historic Scotland and won an architectural award the year it was built.

Now I believe Klein sold the studio in the early 2000's to a "business tycoon" who planned to restore the studio into his house, in 2002 a property developer in Edinburgh was granted permission to convert the building to residential use.
It has been empty and decaying since :(

The building was locked up tight but I fell in love with it the moment I seen it, very Le Corbusier style and so modern for it's time.
Such a shame nothing has happened to it, I can see so much potential.

    Stealthy Parking :D
As you can see, inside is just bare with mouldy roofs and walls.

Taken from the Southern Reporter in 2005:
Mr Klein admits he is sad his old studio will no longer be used for the purpose for which it was built.
"I am glad in one way that it is being brought back into some kind of use, but it was never intended to be used as a home for someone.
"I would very much liked to have seen it put back into use as a studio for an artist or architect.
Unfortunately, that was never going to be likely."

What a waste of such a great building!
Surely that planning permission has expired now, so.....

Shame that such an unusual building is not being put to good use.

I know about this, pinch of salt required.

I'm a fan of Bernat Klein but he sold the building when he retired, ie he took the wonga. It was sold to a public body that spent a lot of money ruining the interior, they eventually went bust.

Sold on to a developer -not a tycoon- and change of use granted for residential. Womersley -the original architect-I understand did some sketches to make it into a house so I don't understand why BK fusses about this aspect.

If you sell you have to move on in life, perhaps he regrets having sold it but as I say, his decision to do so.

Work was about 80% complete when a leak of the water main at the top of the building went unnoticed for two weeks which ruined a lot of good work. All the crap put in by the Interpretation centre was removed, roof repaired, crumbling brickwork at base totally re-built etc. It looks sad but it will get sorted.

We are three years into a downturn where Banks are only interested in lining their pockets rather than lend to complete the works for jobs like this.

First dibs, sorry it's taken. But if any good news will let you know.

PS Am a big fan of this site and others like it

I pass this frequently and I can't think of any real work being done on it in the last 6 years.

There was a lot of activity in 2004 with a caravan on site but since then not much appears to have being getting done.

My dad was a designer for Bernat Klein in the 70's before they moved to this premesis so he never got to work there. He's been to his house which isn't too far from here and it was designed by the same person.
There's some pics of it in it's heyday here.
