Huddersfield Royal Infirmary - Old North Road Site

    Introduction:

First things first, yeah, it's been done a fair few times I know, but hopefully this report will focus pretty much solely on the old Hospital Architecture rather than the modern college buildings. The site is really quite large and the majority of reports from here have done a really good job at covering absolutely everything, but rather minimally, this, I hope will be a detailed look at the older structures on site.

When I first visited here in December last year with @ACID- REFLUX , I can't say for one minute that I expected this one to become the popular tour bus location that it has. I guess I thought the place was a little too bombed out for that, but that said, I've actually really enjoyed both of my visits here. It's the architecture that does it for me personally, but there's bits and bobs that'll please almost anyone in here...

I decided after my visit in December to let ACID go ahead and report on this one, I didn't feel as though I had enough images to tell the story that I really wanted to, so I thought I'd leave it and re-visit soon to finish the job. Something that never happened thanks to the mass amount of industry that's been laid to waste in the past few months taking priority, that was until @ledgehammer dropped me a message asking if I wanted to join them for a wander round, a good reason to meet up and finish the site!

    History:

I'm not going to lie, I've not gone to massive amounts of effort to try and track down a history for this place. The internet seems pretty scarce regarding information on this one, I have however managed to pull together a few bits of history and a couple of images to show how the hospital site used to look.

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary was first established in 1831, and by 1929 was hosting advanced facilities such as Turkish and Russian Baths, an electro-medical department and a team dedicated to treating those with Venereal Diseases.

The hospital closed in 1967, with the forming of the larger, new Royal Infirmary just down the road. In 1968 the site was purchased in its entirety by the Kirklees Technical College who made the site their home. The Edwardian Hospital buildings are now Grade 2 Listed, and thankfully as you'll see in the report still host many of their original features despite been trashed...

A Statue of HRH Edward VII in the Hospital Gardens, the statue remains, but this is now sadly a car park.

One of the many operating theatres back in the Edwardian Days.

    Pictures:

Let's start off in what would have been the original entrance to the Infirmary.

I've got to say, I think you've got to have a keen eye and a good imagination to really enjoy this one, but little details like this one are really what made it for me, they don't make 'em like this anymore...

    Operating Theatre turned Cookery Class!
Notice the original flooring revealing itself under the equally as nice 60's floor tiles...

The last bed, I know it was brought in for filming, but at least it's the right era...

    All original flooring in here!

Whilst on this level I managed to find a way into the Conditioning Tower and the Roof space, which proved interesting...

Old school air ventilation... I think?

Heading back down, the whole site is full of corridors like this one...

Looking out from the old staff quarters...

    Dorms...

Last one before we head underground...

    Boiler Room...

    Bricked Up Air Raid Shelter?

Things got a little more bizarre here, I don't want to jump to conclusions, but perhaps a medicine store? Or a mortuary's body freezers? I don't know, some seriously old cork lined fridges though...

And assorted slabs (Similar to those in High Royds basement)...

And that's all I think, I could add more but I was wanting to try and stick as much as I could to the original Royal Infirmary stuff as possible.

    Cheers for Reading

Good to see someone focusing on some of the original details, rather than the standard shots that have been seen quite a lot.

Certainly a lot more to the old site than previously thought.

    Cheers for posting.

Nice representation there mate :thumb and proves there is lots of interesting stuff beneath the rubbish, once you ignore most of tea newer sections.

Yeah not come across those tyoes of fridges ? before . I'm sure one of the Pros will enlighten us .

Like I said previously, who knew it'd turn into Kirklees-a-lot :D

Thats a nice report. Much better than a bunch of arty shots of the same bed.

Yeah the roof spaces and basements are pretty cool. Just don't get lost in them on your own with no torch and a dead phone battery!

Edit: just two amendments from me... New North Road* and Huddersfield Technical College* turned Kirklees College, not Kirklees Technical College.

Really like the focus on the detail, it's something that hasn't really been looked at from here

Depends where you mean, there are some buildings around the Highfields area (local speak), but are still in use for the most part.

I've done all of this campus. Not posted anything, mind.
