You know it's gonna be a fun day when you are sat in the pub at 12.30 drinking a locally brewed 6.7% IPA, you are on your second pint, access to Bootham has already been sussed out before the pub opened, all you have to do is enjoy the beer until you have dried off a bit more and the rain stops!
I knew this one was going to be fun. I was well aware security were based inside 24/7. What I wasn't prepared for was a certain someone marching up to the security desk while the guard was sat there, all so he could get a corridor shot from the front door, resulting in the police being called and the place being baited up a bit - this happened a few days before my visit. I wasn't sure what to expect when I was inside so tensions were a bit high, shots were a bit more rushed than usual, but I managed to get in and out without any drama at all. Probably because the guard on shift looked like he was days away from retirement!
Some history yoinked from @SpiderMonkey, just for a change!
York Lunatic Asylum was first proposed in 1772, via advertisements in the York Courant for those interested in a project to erect an asylum in York, and meetings for this purpose followed, and the building began construction the same year.
The hospital opened in 1777 with facilities for 54 patients. It was designed by John Carr who had also worked on buildings such as Fairfax House and the County Assize Courts.
In September 2015 the building was declared unfit for purpose and was ordered to close by the end of that month. The hospital soon closed on the 1st of October 2015, which meant patients had to be transferred suddenly, to different facilities.
Externals taken just after I left. The guards had just changed over, the younger bloke inside who had just started wasn't too happy after I took this before leaving.
There is the old boy leaving work for the day
See him standing looking out of the window to the left of the door?
Thanks for looking!
