History
Bunting & Sons greenhouses were built in 1960’s, they were mainly built for the purpose of tomato growing and research into pest control for tomato plants. The company's research was very successful, but production ended in 2000.
Bunting and Sons, who wanted to dub the area as Horkesley Park, went into administration in 2014 owing £14million and the land was among assets which were sold off.
As far as I can find out, it has now been sold to housing development and 22 homes have been proposed.
The Visit.
After finally getting a day off together me and the misses headed out with a few places in mind but mainly the greenhouses.
(Normally good but in this case not) The sun was shining brightly on a morning of a day that would end up being one of the hottest days of the year.
And we were about to walk in to big greenhouses with the majority of the glass intact.
Im sure you can imagine a 27 degree day inside a greenhouse…we were melting.
We parked up and walked across a field, the sun beating down slowly coming to the realisation that this might not be the best idea to head inside. But we couldn’t resist.
Stepped inside and fuck! It was like a wall of heat. the ground was dusty and wild plants seemed to be thriving. At least the sweat dripping off us was watering the wild plants I guess.
Inside the greenhouses seemed to go on forever, one large room after another.
Somehow they had managed to leave a white ford escort van inside or ‘rape mobile’ as it was tagged.
As i was kneeling down trying to get the right angle to photograph an amazing looking wild flower I heard a massive squeal.
being to interested in what i was doing I ignored it. Then another squeal, then the misses running towards me shouting run theres a wild pig! Laughing I asked her where? she was already squeezing through a gap to get out. Fear is contagious, that’s when i turned around and scarpered. Turns out they were fenced inside.
Laughing it off we started walking over to the main building, when we got there we were having a nose through the windows, another noise…this time a man shouting at us that we shouldn’t be here!
That dam pig ratted us out. The bloke must of heard him squealing at us.
Needless to say unfortunately our visit was cut short.
Photo time.
Walking through the field (that stuffs irritating when it gets in your shoe!)
Thanks for having a look.
