Catesby tunnel is a bit of a monster at 2997 yards.
It was opened in 1897 and closed in 1966 and was situated on the old Rugby to Woodford GCR line.
Visited with Diehardlove on a visit after work that ended up being very late.
On previous reports the tunnel seemed to be open, it has now been locked at both ends and is a very tight squeeze to get in.
So off we went for the next few hours.....
The Southern portal
The drains running up the centre of the tunnel were open so we had to watch our footing!
Some great formations
One of the air vents
A wooden cover on one of the drains
A mile in
There were 3 large refuges along the way and numerous smaller ones
Finally the Northern portal, it was a bit wet this end of the tunnel.
