The Thistle Hotel / The Portland
Visited with Circa83
This has always been a go to for somebody just starting off with roofs in manc. First time for Circa83 to be roofing so I thought why not take have a crack at this while we're passing. I did have to go up twice as num nuts (me) left my scarf on top and had to go and collect it for the 2nd time
.
History
I couldn't find much about this particular building itself but of what I do know is beneath.
"A splendid facade of restrained opulence, if that isn't oxymoronic. One of a group of three former warehouses by Edward Walters, of which only the facades remain. This was built in 1858. Pevsner remarks that the balance of the horizontality of the window-pediments and the verticality of the pilasters, and "the integration of sill with lintel, the whole united by the controlling force of cornice and quoins, marks it as a product of Walters' maturity." Grade II listed.
Behind the facade is a hotel."
Seen here in 1964
Also in 1964 when City tower and now Mecure hotel was been built
It now serves as a moderate hotel slap bang in the middle of Picadilly not too far from any form of transport and also serves as a place for roofers to hang out at their leisure
.
As is stands now.
On with the photos
.
And one thrown in for good luck
.
If anyone is out and about in manc or fancies doing anything. Derps or roofing or whatever else. Give us a shout
