    Visited with concreteJungle.

While we were in Bolton we returned to the heavy lid that we had popped shortly before Christmas.
This lead down to a Gantry which is suspended from the wall of this large circular tank and acts as both a viewing platform and a final CSO screen for the nearby river outfall at the same time.

This tank is designed to fill up when the sewer is surcharged during heavy rainfall events and prevent to overflow from ending up in the nearby river. As with most of these huge impressive tanks, no matter how big they are, there is always evidence of them filling right to the top and overflowing. This tank is no exception as the usual jamrags, johnies and jism can be seen stranded on the metalwork in the third shot.

There is no way down from this access point into the tank itself but you can see a staircase from the other side of the tank winding its way down into the filthy depths. The heavy rain had stopped many hours ago, but the tank was still around half full and in the slow process of being pumped out with the water being returned to the sewer now that there was capacity available.

First 2 shots are mine and the second 2 are concreteJungle's.

    Hello,

I missed this one, not lived in bolton for donkeys years, but thinking of going back for a visit soon. I know about the code about asking for access, so I won't push for location details, think I have a rough idea of where it is anyway.

Does this one ever fill up to the top, and how bad is it smell wise? This gantry safe to stand on, I don't fancy crashing down X amount of feet into dubious looking water?

    Cheers,

    pastybarm

What does belled up mean? Blocked up?

Can we assume then there is only one means of access to this hairy looking site?

    Cheers on,
    pb
