Torphichen Preceptory was the home of the Knights hospitaller ( Knights of St John) in Scotland. All the knights Templar property in Scotland was given to The order of St John in 1312 after the Templars were disolved by pope Clement V. Many Templar Knights became Hospitallers. Allegedly the Templar treasury is still unfound but within a half days walk of here.
This building was started in the 1140's and was upgraded and altered for a few hundred years.

    ok the preceptory
the original building is the big tower. note the arrow slots in the spiral staircase

you enter this impressively high room

considering these windows are around 6 to 800 years old, they are quite brilliant

the hole in the centre goes up to next level

    up the staircase

    view out an arrow slot

I wasn't allowed above this point

so I didn't climb this staircase. ( note the original stairs underneath)

so of course I couldn't have been above looking down the staircase

and I didn't walk on these rafters

note the templar sign on the wall

looking up the 50 ft chimney

even the interior walls are at least 4 feet thick

    lots more to see
if you are around the area its worth a visit

    more pics at http://s1087.photobucket.com/albums/j461/pantomime_horse1/Torphichen Preceptory/

    cheers for looking
