    again remembering from years ago
there is a tunnelwide enough and high enough for a barge near erskine
there used to be a pond ( filled in over 30 years ago to act as a header for it) .
there is a burn that runs through it but it should be walkable albeit quite deep mud.
I walked through it about 30 years ago wearing wellies but think waders may have been better
there used to be quarries closeby here . the burn/canal possibly was used to transport stone. also there was a mansion house close to the far end of the tunnel. the house was demolished about 30 years ago.

    directions
from the erskine side of the erskine bridge follow A726 towards erskine.
about 200/300 yards from bridge take a left into ferry road (also known as lafferty place).
after entering ferry road, park at second right angled corner.
follow footpath for about 100 yards
to your right you will see a burn.
you are now standing above tunnel.

The 1899 map shows a path but it's not till 1914 that it's marked as a tunnel.

The old maps website is here.
What I normally do is put the co-ordinates into here which then opens up a page with loads of links to various maps including the old map site.

I visited it a while ago. One interesting feature is that the last few yards of the brick vaulting at the north end are diagonal whereas the rest are at right angles. Study of old maps seems to show that the main drive to Erskine House ran over the top and the route was realigned requiring the north end of the tunnel to be extended.

Was it for a canal?I don't know as the old mapping does not seem to show one.

You should find some pictures at:- http://s238.photobucket.com/albums/ff103/SeScoFox/Erskine Tunnel/

seemingly it was used to move wood from the saw mill to the Clyde
