NOT visited by me :gay but found on a biking site
I tried to compile few facts about the base:

    * designed in 1957 under code name „Object 505“
    * excavations started in mid 1959
    * works completed in 1965, and first units of YU air force were deployed year later
    * there are three galleries , 400, 500 and 350 meters long, 8 meters high and 20 meters wide
    * able to withstand direct hit with nuclear warhead up to 20 kt
    * entries into galleries were protected by blast doors, 1 m thick, 21 m high and 9 meters wide, weight 100 t, they were able to hermetically seal the base
    * able to support one week of combat operations without any resupply
    * base of 117 Fighter Aviation Regiment, with three squadrons (MIG 21 PF) and 323 Reconnaissance Squadron (MIG 21 R), about 60 planes totally
    * cost was approx. 4 billion dollars
    * used by Serb forces during war in Croatia in 1991
    * beginning of conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina made airbase strategically unobtainable, so it was totally destroyed in mid May 1992

    Abandoned Airbases and National Parks
Zeljava (near Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina) airport was one of the most secret military airbases in ex Yugoslavia. Here you can see how it looked many years ago:
Airbase was demolished in May 1992, after federal army withdrawal from there.

Here is site where you can find lot of info about airport and other facilities located nearby.

    http://www.firewirehr.host.sk/Zeljava-index2_eng.html

Planes were stationed in tunnels in nearby mountains and runways were on the surface.

There are few things that you must take care of when visiting. It is not tourist site, location is on Croatian – Bosnian border, and it is infested with mines. We announced our presence to Croatian border police. so he took care of it. Tunnels are not mined, but it is not advisable to touch anything. It is also possible to enter tunnels on Croatian side of the border, exit in Bosnia, and get arrested. There is lot of dust inside, and in some places you can smell kerosene.

Tunnels were demolished using enormous quantities of explosives, results are clearly visible on pictures above. If you are not familiar with break-up of Yugoslavia, than is probably hard to understand what happened, and why and by who is airbase demolished, but trying to explain what happened would took us into recent history and politics and this is not what this report is about.

Out of the tunnels, it is time to explore surroundings.
