I remember doing a guided tour of some of the underground shelters with Manchester Walks a few years back. It started off around the Midland hotel with a few above the surface site seeing before heading under The Great Northern for a bit of shelter exploration which (at the time) was something new and interesting to me.

Last I heard, part of the shelter had flooded and put a stop to these guided walks. Does anyone know if the site is still accessible (via permission visit) or if it's still off limits due to flooding damage?

They still do tours once a year I think, and the Granada end of the shelter has been flooded for a really really long time. Well.. The whole thing used to be a canal.

When we went down there (Summer 2013 I think?) only part of it was flooded and it was only ankle deep and the section that looked like it could have been used for toilets. The larger sections and the large main room were bone dry at that time.

Yeah, as you go through it gets deeper and deeper until it's above waist deep. I think 2013 was the last time I was in there actually and yeah, the section under Great Northern was dry. Should still be I think. You could go for a look but the fun police have welded the man hole. Dickheads.

You're right about the fun police, was to be expected really since every man and his dog kept whizzing the lock off

I take it permission visits by way of the Great Northern are frequently knocked back?

When on the photo walk we had to walk through a large glass door and then a security door to gain access - both of which aren't accessible without permission.

Permission visits are a no go at the moment and tours have been stopped after a sewer overflowed into the junction.
