Lead or Rumour info - Vent Shafts nr Mottram (M67)

    Saw what looks like a vent shaft in the middle of the field at the end of the M67 near to Mottram yesterday. I would guess at it being around ten feet in height and made of local stone.     and when I had a quick look at Google Earth I noticed what seem to be three more in the vicinity in a very definite line

    I've no idea what these are and can't find any information on them but maybe someone on here does?

    Air shafts foron the water tunnel that runs under Mottram Moor from the Longdendale reservoirs to Manchester.

    Wouldn't have a clue mate - I'm sat in Somerset and have never heard of the M67, Mottram, or these airshafts - I just used the info you posted and google - like you could have :p

    I just put the words that were on the map and the words 'air shaft' into google - it wasn't the toughest piece of research I've done.

    Cant find any pics of it but still looking...
    Its on Wikipedia at least.
    Not exactly ideal weather for mooching about forecast this weekend :(

    I had a look at one or two of these things, they seem to lead from Arnfield towards Hyde (or vice versa)

    After a large downpour you can hear water rushing inside them

    Not even at the ends? I reckon it starts in the United Utilities plant over the road from Arnfield Reservoir but its all fenced off, even from the back near the river :( (had a butchers earlier)

    Would be a damn shame if there were totally inaccessible given the length that the tunnel appears to be.
