Birmingham is the city of the pen nib. In it's jewelry quarter there were dozens, if not scores of little workshops where rows of women stamped out the nibs on small fly presses. Hughes is a very old set of long thin workshops. The works made nibs in the 60's when of course fountain pens and the "Biro" made them virtually obsolete.

The works is very stripped but still retains character. Mooching about I was still able to find some trace of the former pen trade after all those years!
