Wear Court Care Home was originally a residential dwelling until 1993 when it was converted into a care home catering for 30 residents,
It closed in 2011 after a fire safety inspection stated that 48 mahogany doors in the property had to be changed.

Owner Dr David Ratliff requested financial assistance from Sunderland Social Services as he claimed the change would cost more than £20,000, but was refused.
And because he says the authority suspended new admissions to Wearcourt following the fire report at the end of June 2011, it cannot stay open.

Yet another example of a fine building in Sunderland left to rot, as could be unmistakably felt through the bucking floors and smell of deterioration throughout our explore. The building has only been closed for under two year, yet it would seem it will be another on the list of Sunderland’s forgotten buildings.
Two years in the pipeline… and finally done… an achievement, albeit a bittersweet one. Big thanks to Black for going ahead with ‘my plan’, much appreciate your efforts and determination. :thumb Another building left to rot unfortunately in my home town, but Im glad I eventually got to see inside it after a few months “ponderingâ€â€¦ a fair few recces and an unearthly hour to wake up one freezing morning to finally get it done. Not exactly an epic 'splore as such... but tis another one off the NE list for me :)
