Built and owned by the Co-operative Wholesale Society in 1891, The Wheatsheaf works was the largest footwear factory in the world at the time. Business was booming and the factory provided millions of pairs of shoes and hundreds of jobs.

Later in its life, it was ran by the Shoefayre brand, but cheaper imported goods made production more and more difficult, and in the late 80s, production ceased. The site was neglected and fell into a bit of disrepair.

But now, the site has been bought, the clock has been repaired (we heard it chime) and new surrounding residential buildings have been erected prior to the factory itself being converted into homes. We explored it just as construction on the main building itself is beginning.

Explored with my bestie Iron stine. 'twas a good one.

this used to be an awesome airsoft site, I think it's going to be turned into flats :/ terrible shame.
Did you venture into the basement? scampering around down there in the dark shooting at eachother was great fun, bit risky without great torches though.

Ohhh. We didn't find a basement. Not that I can remember anyway.

Yes, the airsofters. We had no idea at the time about airsoft. We were wondering what all those little circular dents in the walls and what the poly balls on the floor were. Also, a great many spent thunderflashes were scattered around. I know what they are!

Its frankly astonishing that the craftsmanship in the office is still largely intact despite being abandoned for so long. Excellent pictures.

The basement is amazing, there's stairs at the back corner of the main hall, they lead down to the basement there are some really cool turbines in there.

Thunderflashes in confined spaces ¬¬ least fun ever!
