Obviously, Windows 8 is the biggest pile of crap ever forced upon us. Is the free upgrade to Windows 10 going to be anything amazing? Or is it likely to break every single piece of software and every anti-windows8 tweak?

It's Windows, so I'm going to go with yes. Maybe give it a few months for software companies to catch up and patch the broken bits.

Got that little notice down on the taskbar ... research says
    ..."Pricing and release information
Windows 10 will be available on July 29 as a free upgrade (for the first year of availability) to existing Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users."...

Think i'll wait, oh, about 364 days before punching that button!:p
actually, just got a small tablet with win 8.1 to get familiar with how a tablet works & the win 8.1 OS. I'll upgrade that before i turn it loose on the big 'un. basically if you fulfill the criteria you have a year to get a free upgrade. mosta the bugs will be buzzing by then ...:D

little bit of info on the upgrade pasted below..

So how can you now reserve your free copy of Windows 10?
    • First, you must be running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1, and you must have installed a March the Windows update dubbed KB3035583, according to blog site VentureBeat. That update will already be on your PC as long as you have Automated Updates enabled.
    • Peek at your Windows system tray in the lower right corner, and you should see a new icon displaying the Windows logo.
    • ....sorta looky like this win 10 upgrade.jpg ...cuuvin

    • Hover over it, and the popup messages says: "Get Windows 10."
    • Click that icon, and up pops a window that explains how the free upgrade works. Once it's available, Windows 10 will automatically download onto your PC. You'll receive a notification after the download is complete so that you can choose an appropriate time to install it.
    • You can scroll through the various screens of the Get Windows 10 window to read more about the new OS.
    • When you're done, simply click the button to reserve your free upgrade.
    • The reservation screen asks for your email address so you can receive the notification. Enter your email address and click the Send confirmation button. You can now close the Get Windows 10 window.
    • Should you change your mind and wish to cancel the reservation, just click the Get Windows 10 icon again.
    • Click the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner to display the menu and click the link for View confirmation.
    • Then click the link to Cancel reservation and click the button for Cancel reservation to confirm your choice.
Windows 10 is a free upgrade. The upgrade covers the full version of Windows 10, not simply a trial or limited version. It also ensures that you can run Windows 10 on your specific device for free "for the supported lifetime of your device," according to Microsoft.

But there are some caveats. The free upgrade applies only to Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1. So if you haven't upgraded Windows 7 to SP1 or Windows 8 to 8.1, you'll have to perform those tasks first. Also, you have one year from July 29 to upgrade your PC to Windows 10 for free. After that year is up, you'll presumably have to purchase Windows 10 yourself.

Those of you running Windows RT or RT 8.1 are out of luck. Microsoft has excluded Windows RT and RT 8.1 from the free upgrade offer.

Already been running 10 for a while now. Works very well and has a sensible start menu again.

I doubt RT is going to be an issue as RT is utterly fucked, crippled and basically of no use to anyone.

On the flip side if you don't want anything to do with Windows 10 or are just fed up with the icon on your taskbar, simply delete the KB3035583 update and reboot to get rid of it completely.

E2A: Absolutely hated 8 yet I adore 8.1. Works much better, faster and more stable than 7 and once you work out how to avoid ever using metro (although actually it is quite useful for some things) I've not looked back and find 7 machines rather annoying now.

I still run windows 7 Ultimate on my main PC, it works, it's stable and if it's not broke and all that..

Thing is people need to move with the times and stop getting hung up with hating MS (8.1 actually works quite well despite the core GUI being piss poor)

The day's of pissing about with beta's are done with me, I'll just purchase a copy of 10 Ultimate when it's out and make my own mind up :thumb

You won't need to buy it, MS are offering a free upgrade. There's still a little grey area over whether pirated copies are still gonna be included in that but the general consensus is that they will be included albeit with a slightly restricted license.

Totally agree there is nothing wrong with 7 at all.

Free upgrade as in lame Home version or whatever, NO THANKS!

Fuck that, I'd prefer a 'clean' 64bit Ultimate edition at any cost really :thumb

You get like for like. That said there's no 'Ultimate' version so you'll get the Pro version which is essentially the same thing in Windows 10 terms.

I'm just going to say, I moved to OS X a few years ago and haven't looked back since. Whenever the new OS is released everything has already been planned with the developers and it's there ready to work.

Plus a dam sight more security built in as standard.

There definitely is, it is a closed operating system, that makes it a lot harder to create viruses for it. Where as Windows allows anyone and their dog to play with it.

It was poop planning in the early years of Windows that means they can't be more like OS X now, they would have to completely rebuild the operating system to get a similar level of protection.

The difficulty of writing a virus wouldn't be an issue to a virus coder. They're at the cutting edge of exploitation, able to write programs that work undetected despite various defences and A/V scanners etc.

The the facts are... You're only allowed to install software approved by Apple. Well that sucks. And the reality is there aren't enough Macs to make it worthwhile, even if Windows was rewritten, it would still be targeted and viruses would still be written for it, because of the sheer numbers of users.

So anyway, are you saying that the experts report I quoted is false?

In reality , if you are connected & using the web, you can be hacked. period. Doesn't matter what OS, other software you got. Man Makes, Man Breaks. It's all just a big game of digital Russian roulette.
