    Winstanley Hall
    The Visit

First off, I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been going through a lot at home and work, and not had any time to explore. Finally went out for the first time in a few months last night, and let me tell you, it felt phenomenal!

Regarding access, I've read a lot of reports stating they've been chased off by a man with a dog and shotgun and in some instances people have been bitten, so please be careful - I think we just got lucky that we didn't run into him. There is also a Grouse Shooting Range not far from the house, so I wouldn't risk going after the 12th August, unless you want to get shot.

    History

The hall was built in the 1560s for the Winstanley Family. The family were lords of the manor since at least 1252, and may have been responsible for building the moat on he site. The Winstanley's owned the hall until 1596, when the estate was sold to James Bankes, a London Goldsmith and Banker.

Winstanley hall has three storeys and had a date stone of 1584, but may not provide an accurate date of when the hall was constructed as it's not in situ. Extra blocks were added between the 17th and 18th centuries. Further and expensive alterations were made in 1811-19 by Lewis Wyatt in a Jacobean Style. He moved the entrance of the hall and covered the original entrance with a window.

The final additions to the hall were made in 1843, when an extra wing was added. To the south, on lands belonging to the hall, is a small stone building which was used to house bears that provided entertainment for the halls guests.

The Bankes retained ownership of the hall until the 21st century, when it was sold for private development. The hall had been kept in good condition until the 1960's when habitation stopped. As the building decayed and the cost of maintaining The Hall was too much for the family, it was sold on. It was intended to develop the hall into private flats, however refurbishment was held up due to Wigan Council withholding planning permission. The interior is now in a severe state of disrepair.

There was this fucking awesome fountain...

    The inside is in a complete mess, but still awesome to look around. We didn't see it all as it started getting dark, but here's a few shots (sorry, my camera isn't the best with flash);

And then was this weird little house that seems to have been inhabited until around 2012...

Crikey, I thought that was bad 2 years ago but it's really looking ready to cave in on itself now. Funny how they've put a grill over the back door but left every window gaping wide open...

I really liked the place... a proper country seat rather than just a big house that people call a "manor".

I fear the place will end up a shell by the time the decade is out. Bloody shame as there is so much beautiful carved wood and plaster-work in there, but the task of restoring it now is almost unimaginable.

Some nice shots there to be honest, it's a place I have fancied visiting for a while, but never got round to it.

In terms of flash, don't use it! Use a long exposure and lightpaint with your torch, you will get much better shots (plus you will get a lot less attention from anyone who may be passing by outside!)

Yeah, we had to be so careful walking around as the ceilings were all caving in. I know hahah, you can basically just walk straight in!

You should, I really enjoyed it! I'm not very good at lightpainting, I've given it a go a few times, they always end up awful, but I probably just need to get a better torch! Thanks for the advice.

    Exactly, I loved it!

It will, definitely, the ceilings are all caving in. The rain will completely ruin it eventually. It was definitely cost a good few million, it'd be worth it for someone definitely.

Some nice pics there! Surprised how much its gone downhill since I went about 18 months ago... that small house was completely in tact with no windows smashed when I was there...

I might sound really stupid here but what happens after 12th August? :)

Thank you :) & yeah it was pretty bad!

It's the start of the hunting season for grouse, so they'll start shooting them in the area then.

I know, hahah. The man with the dog and shotgun seems to be keeping most people out though, so they probably don't think it's worth the money!
