    Birkenhead Woodside Tunnel

    Visited with Xan_Asmodi.

This was a bit of a spur of the moment 'splore. We where off shooting our normal haunt when we had the idea to see if the Monks tunnel was accessible. After a really embarrassing moment when i didn't fit through a gap in the fence, we finally gain access to the area that house the tunnels. Unfortunately the Monks was sealed up tight, but we managed to get into the Woodside tunnel.

    Hope you enjoy!

Birkenhead Woodside railway station was opened on 31 March 1878 to replace the increasingly inadequate passenger facilities provided at Birkenhead Monks Ferry station. The terminus was built further inland than originally conceived, in order to avoid demolition of the Mersey ferries workshop, situated on the bank of the river. The station built on an east-west axis with the lines servicing the station came from the south. The station was accessed via a half mile tunnel from the south which curved to the east into the station. This fell in line with the Liverpool termini, with only Liverpool Exchange lacking tunnel access.
The station was very busy right up to the reshaping of British Railways in the 1960s. The programme of route closures in 1963, known as the Beeching Axe, included the closure of three of Merseyside's mainline terminal stations: Liverpool Exchange and Liverpool Central high-level, and also Woodside terminal station. It officially closed on the 5th of November 1967.

The site, on which the station was built, was to the east of Birkenhead's original railway terminus at Grange Lane, which closed in 1844. To the north lay two tunnel entrances; the first, completed in 1844, led to the town's second terminus at Monks Ferry. To the left of this portal lay the tunnel to the new passenger terminus of Birkenhead Woodside, built in 1878. Subsequently, the Monks Ferry branch was used exclusively for freight.

In order to join up with the existing track of the Chester and Birkenhead Railway, the half mile-long tunnel from Woodside to alongside the existing Monks Ferry tunnel entrance, at Birkenhead Town station, was constructed using the cut-and-cover method, with most of its length running under Chester Street. The tunnel has been back filled meaning it has lost almost 10ft in hight. There is also signed of the roof deforming and allot of water ingress, so i'm not too sure how much longer this old girl has

Weird fungal growth. Does anyone know what this is?

More of the odd fungus on the floor. Possibly a new sentiant life form in Birkenhead... Maybe not lol.

Northern end of tunnel with blockage. Don't know who did this but naughty!

Someone has been trying to dig through the blockage! There was also evidence of someone digging into a bolt hole with limited success.

Cheers for looking and cheers to Xan for a decent explore. I am really interested in knowing what that fungus was if anyone knows.

One of these (Monks tunnel) was open a few weeks ago thanks to Mr Dewalt, we rolled up to find a brand new lock in place, having missed it by hours apparently :( but watch this space.
