    Workington ROC Post

    Opened 1962
    Closed 1991

I found myself some spare time whilst in the area and decided to tick this post of the list, making it the 27th post I've visited. After walking through a large field of nettles, I found this post to be Locked on a Single Padlock, just as described in the most recent report on another forum back in 2010.

Externally, the post looks in generally decent condition, although someone has had a good go at trying to prize open the hatch. Which is a pretty pointless exercise .
I assume the post's internal condition hasn't altered much since @turkey visited back in 2009, Report.

Not a bad view looking out towards the Solway Firth!

I still had a little bit of time left, so I decided to have a quick look at RNAD Broughton Moor a few miles away. The site is huge and requires a good few hours of exploring, which I didn't have. The buildings I saw in my very short time inside the site were pretty much empty shells, there must be a few gems though ;)

    Thanks for looking :thumb

Being able to go inside would have made walking through all them Nettles a bit more worth it!

True, but to be fair you did agree wth me when I said they should be better protected on your other ROC post ;)

Yes, and I'm happy this one is padlocked. But when you first arrive to see it locked, just like with any explore, you do feel a little disappointed. Then you leave with the knowledge that it's being saved ;)

Yeah true, but like you say at least it's being saved and not left to the mercy
    Of nature and kids .

Definitely, the initial natural feeling of disappointment is always very short lived, because you know that's it's being protected for the foreseeable future and that makes me happy, especially when considering the condition of many posts these days. ;)

Yeah me too, at the end of the day they are part of history and to me
Just to leave them is in a way disrespectful ,
But I can see the problem of there is a lot of them out there.

I like experiencing History and climbing down into ROC posts is experiencing History for me. So If I were to Padlock each post I visit, it means no one else can enjoy and experience the History. But then that means it's vulnerable to vandalism. So it's a difficult balance. But also, a lot of posts can't be padlocked because both of the hasps are cut. I tried to padlock the slowly declining post at Great Whittington, but both of the hasps were cut so it was not possible, unfortunately!
Padlocking to restore them is good, because you secure them against Vandalism, and open the them up to the public so they can experience the history, it's a win-win situation. More people should restore them :)

Me and my friend stayed overnight at the Whittington post a couple of years ago andvnot long after I found a note saying itvwas being converted into something else but I went a few months ago and it was still there and unlocked. In fact I put a video on YouTube of one of our visits

Ah yes, that video. If it's the video I'm thinking of, we've actually exchanged comments on it over the last few months :thumb
