After a long overdue scheduled meeting I arranged to link with Twizt – who described himself as looking a bit like David Badiel, Amaydalism and UrbanPanda. The venue was to be a pub in Chiswick by the river. Whilst waiting for Twizt I wondered if this was perhaps David Badiels local and if he was in there quietly supping a pint, how it might have been received if I had excitedly introduced myself as Circlemaker from the forum. It wasn’t his local but it turned out, according to Twizt, that this was indeed Ant and Decs local. So after the others arrived and we got down to introducing ourselves and discussing sites and the experience we had had so far and as we continued speaking who should walk in and sit behind us – the one from Ant and Dec with the big forehead (you can do a great impression of him by looking at your reflection in the reverse of a desert spoon). I suggested we go to a local site I have been keen to explore.

There’s not really too much I could find regarding the past history of the building and it has remained empty for at least 10 years. Inside the only clue was a mission statement headed Alpha Laval Thermal Ltd “Business Mission – To delight out customers and meet their expectations through providing solutions to their heat transfer needs with a Total Service Process of Sales and Aftercareâ€. You can only assume that either their customers were not clearly delighted and their expectations met or there wasn’t enough sales & that their aftercare was particularly bad, or perhaps a combination of both. I must admit heat transfer needs is not something which automatically screams high revenue and enough turnover to cover the costs of a 17 story building and the workers who might drag themselves out of bed each morning, hence why I suspect it no longer has occupancy.

Easily accessible from the lower levels this building has about 4 levels to easily explore before you reach either boarded up fire escapes or on one stairwell a gap in the bars only the thinnest most agile urbexers can squeeze through. I recommend not eating a large meal before attempting this feat. Most the venue has been smashed up on the lower levels and looks as though it has been the host to several unlicensed late night musical spectaculars playing repetitive beats at high amplitude. Graffiti is a common sight inside and there is smashed glass on pretty much every floor surface, DO NOT ATTEPT THIS URBEX IN FLIP FLOPS. There is an open lift shaft which gives ample opportunity for one of those great photos which look like a scene from the film set of Aliens. Speaking of which a journey into the lower level gents reveals a large number of used bullet cartridges where presumably Riply, Hicks or Apone had been caught short and nipped in for a pee only to find an alien drying their hands and had hastily despatched the said alien with enthusiasm.

I will go back to try accessing the upper levels and gain access to the roof where I am certain some spectacular photographs can be taken of the city as it attempts to sleep.
