Headed up to my hometown of Leicester with Bitca this weekend to take a look at Bradgate Nursing Home - got distracted on the way by Quorn and Woodhouse Station, one of those Heritage Railway sites which is well worth a look if you like old trainz and such!

Anyway, I know its been done a number of times so not really adding much here however, being from Leicester and a former Ambulance Driver , I asked my Dad if he had any memories of this place. Here's what he wrote:

"Uncle Andy and I were dispatched to to recover from measles or chicken pox when we around 3 and 6 years old, respectively. The main thing that sticks in my mind is that it was run like an army camp, with everyone having to be up and beds made very early in the morning, lots of walks in the fresh, and lots of porridge and veggies to eat. Not happy memories at all........very unforgiving. I returned there several times later in life as we used to ferry patients there, from the Leicester Royal Infirmary and General Hospitals when I was in the ambulance service. Seem to recall things much better then."

In its glory days, it looks like it would have had a couple of sweeping driveways up to the front, plus some lovely grounds. All are now seriously overgrown and you'll need to know where to look for this as you won't see it from the road!

Its been completely trashed since closing - every window has been smashed (and there's a lot of windows) many of the ceilings and walls have been pulled down and many of the props damaged. It's also suffered a number of arson attacks causing fire dame in many areas. There's still a lot to see though, including some good basements and pipe runs and some excellent graffiti / murals.

Bumped into a nice bunch of lads having a mooch around the place who thought we were there to throw them out. They asked us to take them down to the basement as they were scared to go on their own (they even admitted that) and were happy to let Bitca lead the way!!

Entrance and exit was simple and all in all a nice easy explore and whilst nothing fabulous to see, you won't regret it. Give it a go!
