    History
Carmel College was a predominantly Jewish co-educational bording school in England operating between 1948 and 1997. It was first situated at Greenham Common near Newbury and then at Mongewell Park near Wallingford, Oxfordshire. It was Europe's only Jewish boarding school. It also had a very small number pupils who were not of Jewish descent, as day pupils. It was referred to as the "Jewish Eton" and Carmel College alumni were referred to as "Old Carmelis". Typical boarding fees in 1996 were £10,000 per school term (i.e. £30,000 per year). In 1990 it topped the list of the 20 most expensive boarding schools in the country. It was closed in June 1997, mainly owing to diminishing pupil numbers and financial difficulties, having been seriously affected by the termination of government assisted places by the Labour government.

Visited with JdotN15 and a non member (my step-dad). Visiting my parents who live in Oxford, thought we would pop down for a mooch at this beauty. It actually turned out my step-dad fitted the kitchens in Carmel which is why he tagged along (and drove :thumb). After a scout around and upsetting some dogs JdotN15 found a way in. As we were getting in, our step-dad was a look out and got caught by some groundsmen. He told us to get in and keep our heads down. As he was fobbing them off, we received a text saying he had to go back to the car. (He took one for the team but was gutted about his first explore). Such a lovely building, well worth a look, just can't believe its been left since 97 and it's in such good shape.

Glad to see this place is in such good nick. Someone is certainly looking after it for it to remain in such wonderful condition.
Those 'History Today' books remind me of the sketches by Newman and Baddiel, anyone old enough to remember those?
