The Carmelite Community of Carcassonne left France in 1901, as so many Religious Communities were forced to do, and stayed temporarily in London. While there, they received a pressing invitation from Bishop, later Archbishop Whiteside to come up North, and they settled for a few years in Lancaster.

When that site was required for a new Town Hall, the Carmelites took Orrell Mount near Wigan, now a hotel close to the motorway, a lovely old property, on a ten year lease. When this expired, they decided to build the present Convent, as close to the College as permitted, for it had always been the Archbishop's desire that the Carmel should be the powerhouse of prayer for the Archdiocesan seminary.

The new Convent was completed in 1917 and the first Mass was said on August 15th 1917

Carmelite nuns spend all but a couple of hours a day in silence, and mustn't been seen by anyone other than priests and nuns from other orders.

The convent shut down about a year ago and the remaining sisters; both living and dead (a local builder was entrusted with the exhumation and transportation!) have now been transferred to another convent in Merseyside. The supposed plan was then that the building was to become a hostel for the homeless. This plan was scrapped when unfortunately for the catholic church pikeys stripped the place out and and so they had to sell the land to a development company to build ten houses.

By the time we got around to going in quite a lot of the place had been demolished sadly but alas, on with the photos.

Please bear in mind I'm not very experienced with long exposures etc and the daylight photos are taken on my phone.

The drawer slides right through with handles on either side, thus allowing, when the doors are closed, items to be passed to and from the nuns by outside visitors without them coming into site.

Penetrating, lubricating and releasing? In a convent?

A wasp nest had obviously been disturbed by the demo, incredible how loud the buzzing was, didn't hang around in there too long!

Doubt there was any problem with the old 'leaving the seat up' argument...

Similar to the double sided drawer there was a few of these cupboards, the inside of which rotates to exchange goods with 'outsiders'

A timer and bell, presumably the alarm clock for the 0530 get ups!
