Crail Airfield first became a naval air station during the First World War. Prior to the start of the Second World War it became HMS Jackdaw. After closing, it became the base for the Joint Services School for linguistics during the 1950's. It was founded in 1951 by British Armed Services, to provide language training mainly in Russian, to conscripts undergoing National Service, although it was rumoured to be training potential spies. After the war, the airbase was taken over by the Royal Navy and was re-named HMS Bruce.

Today, it hosts amateur race days, with participants competing in their own adapted vehicles.
