    Hartwood Asylum.
Part 1 of a great day with Eggbox.

Increasing demands for mental health care strained resources and work began on a new site purchased from Lord Deas, on what was then known, as Lanark District Asylum. The first phase of the Hospital totalled costs of £175,000. Opened on 14th of May 1895, the Lanark District Asylum had six wards, three female and three male and held a capacity of 500 beds.

It also had it's own private railway for the transport of patients. The patients were given a bowling green and a farm in order to facilitate Occupational Therapy. Before the practice of OT, ECT and lobotomy procedures were commonplace at the Hospital. At it's peak the Hospital had almost 2,000 beds and was the largest Hospital in Scotland. It was self sufficient in every way and provided employment for many people.

Hartwood Asylum remained in use until 1998, when it was decided by Lanarkshire Health Board, that the Hospital should be closed.
