Yes.. its an asylum... my favourite type of explore.... as Im sure some of you know this.
I first visited this place about 3 years back and the visit was cut short when all hell seemed to break loose.. but I always wanted a re-visit.
With the recent comments on the Lancaster Development thread, I knew it was going to be a case of getting back there pronto... cue a couple of emails to Stranton... a phone call to a car hire company and two days later we were on our way back down...

"how hard can it be?".... now, this is exactly the place where my sig comes from, as once I managed to get over the initial awesomeness of this building, I was immediately aware of how securely looked after this place was... big time...

Fast forward a couple of years and we were back gaping at it in all its glory... it still is a fantastic building... from the outside...
Nowadays, from the inside is a different matter. I got there too late, as the place is being stripped of its glory and very little remains.
However, it is being renovated, which is a good thing as at least the tower and façade will remain.. (a far cry from what they did with my beloved Cherry Knowle where they demolished the building in all its entirety).

    Brief History: -
Lancaster Moor Hospital was Lancashire’s first County Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1816, extended in 1824 and 1883, and by 1891 it accommodated 1833 patients. The building apparently at one time could hold up to 3200 patients... now, Im well aware it was a huge building, but that figure just blows my mind.... over 3000 patients in the entire building at one point.

To me, it is an awesome, intimidating, and impressive building... all rolled into one... and I loved being back there :)

First 3 photos are from a previous visit 3 year back (just to show comparison)

    (this building has now gone)

and the following are from a recent visit... so recent in fact, that I seriously need to catch up on sleep.
