Report - Mount Elliot Tunnel, New Ross, Co. Wexford, Ireland - Feb 2014

    Unfortunatly, very scetchy.

    The line on which the tunnel stands ran from Macmine Junction (on the main Dublin / Wexford line) to Waterford and was opened in 1887 by the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway Company. In 1963 the line from Macmine Junction to New Ross closed and the track was removed while the remaining branch from New Ross to Waterford stayed open to scheduled 'daily goods' traffic. This however ceased in 1976.

    The tunnel itself is situated about a mile and a half north of New Ross and was operational from 1887 to 1963. It was a bare rock and brick collar (in places) tunnel and curves gently on an approximate 90 degree angle portal to portal. Due to the curve, you are in totlal darkness half way through the 740 yard bore.

    Today it is quite hard to locate due to nature reclaiming the old trackbed. Generally untouched and unchaved, the tunnel is flooded to knee height at its northern end.


    Another one from the one day I managed to get out in Ireland and quite a tunnel which threw up a number of surprises. I don't know who the contractors for the tunnel were but by God, they must have been let loose with the black powder. The majority of the tunnel is bare rock with the addition of a number of brick collars. The height of the bare rock sections do have to be seen to be believed as a double deckered train could easily fit through these sections.

    The first surprise can be seen in photo 1 - top right of the portal as you look is a plaque of some sort. A close up -

    I have tried to find out the history behind Nicholas Coady and his death but haven't got a definitave answer yet. I have found reference to him, his wife and 5 children on the 1911 Irish census but found nothing online relating to his death at the tunnel. I have been told that he died in an explosion there which would suggest he was working there. Still trying to find out more though and will update the thread when I do.

    Continuing along the trackbed from the southern portal you eventually come to this point (southern portal is in the trees) -

    Turn around 180 degrees at this point and you are at this -

    The Barrow Rail Bridge which brought the train over the River Barrow to New Ross. It is a single track steel bridge crossing counties Kilkenny and Wexford, a mile and a half north of New Ross. At 590ft long it spans the river and has a 55ft centre swinging span which could be moved to allow shipping access.

    Hi, Nicholas Coady was my paternal Grandfather and you surmised correctly that he was working on the tunnel when he died.

    He worked for J Hearn builders of Waterford and I believe that they were carrying out repair works to the tunnel when he was killed.

    By that stage he had 11 children I think, the youngest were twin girls of less than a year old.

    The local New Ross paper and many other Irish newspapers reported both on the accident and the subsequent inquest, which I recall reading, was carried out in a pub in New Ross.

    If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and I'll speak to others of my family who know more of the details.

    I actually walked that tunnel from end to end in darkness. Can confirm that there was no ghostly apparitions on that occasion
