This place has been on my radar for a whole so my brother and I, together with Session9 decided to get on down there one very early morning. Cheers to Wevsky, Derphouse and Monk for the heads up :thumb

The day started at 3.30am with several night buses around London filled with drunken revellers and a very expensive train ticket – I definitely didn’t want to return empty handed!

When we got to the site, we met some Derelict Places explorers who were having trouble getting in and we weren’t having much luck either. There’s only so many minutes of walking backwards and forwards looking for access though, before you think screw it and take the painful route instead. This route also proved to be extremely noisy as well – surely security would turn up at any moment? Nothing though! This would be a nice relaxed explore.

Afterwards, we didn’t fancy leaving the same way we came in, so went out into the open, hoping to get that first-class personal escort service. And within a few minutes, it came. Not in the form of Michael (he must be on holiday :D) but someone equally as pleasant.

Too trashed to make it a top site in my books but still a good explore.

    History – (stolen from H1971)
Severalls Mental Hospital near Colchester in Essex closed in 1997. Since then it has started on a slow spiral of decay. Severalls was built in 1913, housing around 2000 patients at its height. During the first half of its life Severalls bore witness to its share of Questionable practices. Doctors were free to "experiment" with new treatments on patients seemingly at will, These practices reached their climax during the 1950's. A change in management during the 1960's saw reforms introduced including the creation of art and music therapy programs and the widespread use of drugs and medication.
Since 1997 This 300 acre site has been left to run wild Vandalism and arson have begun to take their toll on the buildings, Severalls is rapidly going the same way as similar hospitals like Cane Hill and Hellingly.

And finally... the brand spankin’ new hospital. I preferred the old one personally!
