    Site History

Stanton Ironworks have been well documented on this site so I'll keep it short, the Stanton Ironworks later known as Stanton and Staveley was once Ilkeston's largest manufacturing concern and consequently the town's biggest employer of local labour in the area. During its long existence the works produced huge quantities of a variety of products including pig iron, tunnel castings, (used in projects such as the London Underground), pipes and street furniture as well as bitumen, roadstone, chemicals and munition casings. It is likely that if you live in the UK, you are not far away from a S&S manhole cover or lamp post. The Stanton and Staveley group was also part of the British Steel Corporation, forming part of its Tubes Division. At its height, the company employed around 12,500 people of which 7,000 worked at the Stanton works. Production at Stanton Ironworks in Ilkeston drew to a close when the last pipe was cast on May 24, 2007. The last of the 185 production workers at the pipe-making factory walked out of the gates for the final time.

Today there's not much of the old site left, i think the majority of it has been flattened Most of the remainder of what is still standing is now derelict and it is believed that it will soon be scheduled for demolition. On the northwest of the site is a signpost for "The Old Iron Works" according to the 50s map the warehouses visited are "Specials Shop" "Nutbrook" & "Spun Plant" we went for a look at the cluster of warehouses still remaining….

    Recent Uses/History

MPC Industrial Solutions Ltd formerly EGA Sinter Ltd. The company was founded in 1972 and produces structural sintered iron parts and iron bearings for a wide range of applications worldwide, including motor cycles, power tools, vacuum cleaners, motor vehicles, water pumps. The company was formerly known as formerly 3D Manufacturing and changed its name to MPC Industrial Solutions Ltd. As of March 15, 2010, MPC Industrial Solutions operates as a subsidiary of Bowman International Limited, sometime between Bowmen International taking over and now the site has closed.

The Flange Pipe Plant, Saint-Gobain pam uk operated out of its headquarters at Ilkeston they employed 160 people on the site which also housed a Flange Pipe Plant and a large Stock Ground, where the pipes which were manufactured within the division were held. Between June last year and today the company relocated its flange pipe plant, which had the capacity to process over 150 km of water and sewer pipes each year, within the facility as it was adjacent to the stock ground and pipe processing plant where the full length pipes are stored and lined.
