Midland Railway commenced the boring of the 840 yard long Alfreton Tunnel (or Cotes Park Tunnel as it was originally known) and in January 1862 it was opened to traffic. The tunnel became a bottleneck due to heavy traffic through the Erewash Valley and in 1899 work began to bore a second parallel tunnel. The adjacent tunnel opened in 1901 with both tunnels being used until the 60’s when the line was reduced to two tracks, leaving the original tunnel redundant.

Thanks to @Gsxrwayne on this one. Just your regular abandoned train tunnel but I haven't seen it on the forums before so worth a few pix.
