Built in the 1940’s according to old maps these two buildings are in the process of being converted into affordable housing.

The main claim to fame of the fire station is that the ‘fireman with the hourglass…who rushes in..’ in the Beatles song Penny Lane supposedly came from this station (although it’s about half a mile away from Penny Lane).

I first checked these about 18 months ago, but there was no access at the time and the police station was still partially in use.

A look through the windows showed mostly empty modernised offices which didn’t look particularly interesting.

Nevertheless, noticing a builder’s lorry parked outside last week, I decided to have look anyway late one afternoon, dodging the odd builder.

Police station external from Google - its actually a biggish triangular building with a central courtyard.

I was much too late for this place - nothing but stripped rooms and corridors.

A couple of rooms with heavy doors such as the one shown below may once have been cells.

By this time the battery in the camera had died so I switched to my second-hand phone and did a quick circuit of the fire station, which was also almost completely stripped.

However the pole was still there - went upstairs to have a slide but some spoilsport had blocked the entrance doors.

Then headed over to the tower, which seems to have been a 60s addition to the fire station, and featured an inside climbing wall.

I assume these spools were for hanging hoses out to dry.

Views towards the city centre and Mossley Hill Church.

Oh wow, I had no idea this had closed! I was scoping the police station out on Google a few months ago because I found info about there having been an air raid shelter there (some other sources mention a 'bomb-proof' police radio room). Did you notice any basement areas while you were there?

I'll be the pole was blocked by the site manager because they knew the builders couldn't be trusted not to have a go.

.

Interesting - I was wondering about a basement, because the fire station has one.

However I didn't really have the time to have a proper look or even see all of the ground floor - too many builders around.

Maybe that cell-like room with 'radio equipment' written on it was the 'bomb-proof' room.
