History

Robbed from @GRONK's report.

Lister Drive/ Andrew Carnegie Library was constructed with a donation of funding from an Andrew Carnegie, and opened in 1905. The Library is a two-storey brick built building, a slate roof and an octagonal turret and was designed by Thomas Shelmerdine. The Library originally contained a lending library and a number of reading rooms. Sadly, following an accident involving a member of staff, the library closed in 2006 and has remained vacant since. This period of un-occupation has resulted in the library being subject to theft, vandalism and neglect. However the library is set to get a fresh start with plans being approved to turn the building into a community hub.

Our visit

Random day out in Liverpool, stopped off here for an hour or so with @Bolts and Nath Currently being stripped out, still a rather cool old building tho. Some lovely tiling, the parquet flooring was being stacked up, and they had started stripping some of the plaster work down. few builders lights about some PIR's flashing away. Although it's very empty I really enjoyed it in here. Very photogenic place.

I'll start with a gimpy groupie

I used to occasionally work at the sub station across the road from here, I had a look around here a few times but never found an entrance, the building next to it looks impressive as well, looks like an old swimming pool but is currently occupied. Great report and photos though

Next door is the old swimming baths currently occupied by Lister fisheries and pet centre, one of the worse most overstocked pet places I've ever seen (read some of the online reviews!) - some lovely tiling in there, with the bath area occupied by fishtanks.

For those thinking of visiting the Carnegie library, there is an alarm system which sometimes works...just hope it keeps out the local scallies long enough to stop them burning it down.

i went today and we had to leave because the alarms set off on us.

ahaha the alarms were going off in 2010. we went and the front door was open, sits on the balcony - next thing a load of matrix lads come legging it through the door. should have flipped the latch on our way in and locked 'em out.
