At the former site of the South Entrance to the Western heights (Archcliffe Gate), these buried rooms served as cells for military defaulters returning through the gate. Although externally they appear the same as the rifle galleries adjacent to them, they are not linked in any way and access was only possible via the guardroom. In an emergency however, the narrow windows would have doubled as firing positions into and over the now infilled moat.
