History

The site was used up until the 1960's to test naval shells, 20mm cannons as far as I can tell.

The guns / cannons were fired from one end of the range into the tunnels pictured below. They are actually only about 20-30 metres deep and were lined with railway sleepers to try to deaden the noise (although a lot of that has now been stripped out and removed, presumably sold).

There is also a raised walkway in the trees to the right of the two ranges which lead to several outbuildings some of which are pictured below also.

Since its closure it has been used for riot police training, dog training and is now used as an airsoft site by a friend of mine and also used by a company for team building.

If anyone is interested in having a look around this site I can probably get the keys off my mate and do a bit of a guided tour :)

Ha! Sorry for the late reply. I've just found this place on Google Earth and was wondering what it was. Research lead me to this report. Now I know... Thanks.

I grew up in Melton Mowbray and this was a regular playground for us in the early 90s.
There used to be lots of old vehicles piled up that had been used as targets, and later on there was a locked storage cage with petrol bombs and riot shields.

Passed here yesterday not sure what it's being used for now but fence is all repaired and a shiny lock on the gate
When me and a friend visited last year it was a right mission to get inside thanks to fence repairs. We'd pretty much walked 2/3 of the length of the fence before finding a suitable access point, which has since probably been repaired too. I'm guessing the airsoft players must report any holes they find to the people who are running the site.
