How about having them on just for new threads and not for replies? (I think this is an option for that chatbox from memory)

Indeedy it can get a bit distracting when there's lots of chat and posts happening, although new thread notifications somewhere else on the front page would still be good.

Yep, as I said before - I think the notifications actually kill conversations quite often - as people can't see the flow of any conversation
