The History: Dating from 1899, Balrossie School was originally an orphanage which was commissioned by the Sailors Orphans Society of Scotland for the children of deceased sailors. In 1931 the section of the home reserved for boys was closed, as relatives of the boys who had previously not wanted anything to do with them would now receive a weekly government allowance for looking after each child. The section for girls continued to operate until 1934.
It was then used by the Boys Brigade prior to WW2 as an outdoor training centre and headquarters for light anti-aircraft during the war. The building became a boarding school from the 1960s until it closed in the 1990s, remaining derelict ever since.
The Explore: The place is just an empty shell and an absolute death trap, so most of the pictures are just depicting the level of decay rather than actual interesting features. The floors are very spongey so, as usual, take care and make sure you are not alone. Despite this, seeing how nature is claiming back the building was very interesting and we enjoyed spending about an hour exploring the site and taking photographs.
