Formerly the joint northernmost continuously inhabited settlement in the world, the former Soviet mining enclave of Barentsburg on the Norwegian Svalbard territory is a perfect Arctic time capsule. Ample vacated apartment blocks, leisure facilities, harbour infrastructure and more litter the isolated town that relied solely on coal for its propserity. Severely underrated. Visited May 2015.
