Barrow Gurney Hospital – November 2010

I’ll do a brief history although I know its been done and done…

Opened in 1939 as a hospital until WW2 broke out and it served as a military hospital until the end of the war. It then went on to become a mental hospital until it was closed down in 2006 and was deemed ‘one of the dirtiest hospitals in the country’

The minute I read about this place I wanted to go, so this was my first urbex.

I havnt got a great deal of photos as my camera isn’t the best but I hope some of them are ok.

We started in the main building. Carefully avoiding all the holes in the floor from people stripping the wires :/ the entire place was mouldy, damp, no ventilation with a wonderful smell of urine , and in some rooms – weed lol.
A lot of it was pitch black ( not good when your group separates and later creep up on you!) There was loads of building maps and blueprints scattered about the place.

After the main building we went to a smaller one, which I think housed a nursery or something similar judging by the mural on the wall and the ‘’immunise your child’’ poster.
At this point a jeep decided to go passed and I start to brick it lol.

We found several other buildings which included offices, a church, hospital like rooms and other rooms which can only be described as ‘cells’.

A lot of the buildings were demolished, and we missed a few others as we didn’t know they existed :(

Some of the rooms were closed off due to bat populations and new conservation buildings had been erected to coax the bats into.

Now on with the pics...

The main building :

you can make out that the sink is covered in a metal grate, I was told this was so they could wash hands but not plunge their faces into the water
