In 1970, in a small studio in hanover Square, BBC Radio London launched; its vibrant sound created to combat the growing number of local pirate stations. Hosting shows like 'Sounding Brass' –a popular phone-in– and 'Black Londoners', its success continued to grow.

In 1981 it moved into the former Radio Times Warehouse on Marylebone High Street, and re-branded as GLR. Although picking up a cult following, its listening base declined. In 2000 the centre was closed, refurbished and launched under its former moniker, BBC Radio London. In 2009, after 73 years of usage, the BBC decided to abandon the base; moving the station to Portland Place, where it continues to run today.

For the last year, the building has been used by a theatre company. I managed to gain access on their last weekend; the developers are moving in, they said. It's to be turned into luxury flats.
