Report - Birkdale Deaf School 25/05/2019

(Main Building - Unable to access)​

Today I visited the Birkdale school for the deaf along with @Shaun. This school was a private school that closed in 2003. In 2010 (Echo News), the building suffered a great amount of fire damage due to an arson attack. According to a news post in 2018, there are plans for the building to be turned into a retirement village. This was actually the first time I have went on an urbex, and my first actual exploration, so I was pretty excited to see how nature has been slowly taking over the buildings, and the natural decay. The main building was heavily blocked up tight, but we managed to get a close-up of the front of the building, as well as access into the pool, the gym, and a few classrooms in a secondary building.

As we entered the building, we came into this rather small hallway which led us into the main hall. The main hall also seems to have served as the gym for the school. There seem to be some old lockers or filing cabinets on the ground as we entered, as well as fallen ceiling panels. Behind me in this image, is also a climbing frame.

As we made our way out of the gym, we came across some old artwork on the walls of the inside of the building. They all seemed to be related to France, so perhaps it was the French, or Languages, classrooms? This area was rather heavily hit with graffiti such as swastikas etc, as people do...

We decided to head further down through the hallway, and found a few old classrooms, with blackboards too. You can also see that further down the hallway, nature was starting to make it's own way into the building, with weeds growing through the ground.

Walking down the hallway led into more classrooms. Some of them still had the boards inside but were heavily graffitied.

Moving further into the building, we entered another hallway. This one seemed slightly less damaged, and one side of the wall was rather preserved.

After exploring the main section that we could access, we made our way further onto the property. Climbing on a small roof, we found the entrance to the property. I thought this would be a great place to get an image of the main building.

Climbing over the bricks of the partly demolished building, we walked into what used to be the school pool (no rhyme intended). This seems like a rather small pool for such a big facility.

On the way of leaving the building, we passed the library, which looked almost like a bombshell had hit it. I believe this was a library, though it might have also been an art classroom.
