5th on my SSI redundant sites list,
1st being South Bank Coke Ovens & 2nd being Lackenby Steel Works.
Been wanting this for along as I can remember,
always thought about it each time the train passed by,
but never felt comfortable attempting it while live.
Once I read about the official closure,
I began too plan an explore as I now know the sorroundings well.
Was gonna be a fortnight earlier but wasnt meant too be.
One long walk across industrial & no mans land too reach the SSI site,
access too the conveyors are sealed with corrugated but I know the access points.
Alot of the conveyors now have no electricity, along with parts of the site.
Once I entered the miles of conveyors its like a maze,
because there sealed at the mid way point with corrugated & the steps been severed.
But I know the route through them, one which is a straight mile long.
Once I eventually exited the miles of conveyors,
another short walk across industrial & no mans land too the blast furnace.
Abit eerie as theres nobody about,
except secca doing their 15 - 45 mins randon rounds of the perimiter.
Stripping of the equipment was evident,
with piles of steel & debris lying about.
each time I visit here, (been 6 times now) theres a gradual deteriation.
Considering it was noon & light,
wasnt gonna risk the summit of the Blast furnace even though tempting so theres no photographs.
Also I had another site too visit 100yds away, thread too follow soon.

Blast Furnace Redcar, by stranton

opened in 1978 by British Steel,
became Corus in 1998 - 99.
Then Tata in 2007 & SSI in 2012, the latter went bankrupt in October 2015 & closed the site.
Which included both Coke Ovens, the Steel Works & Sinter Works too the west.

Do the conveyors have four tracks all the way, or is that just the end point?

That section with 4 converyors shown in Strantons last couple of photos is the feed to the furnace bunker, so yes it's the end point from which the ore/coke/pellet are stored ready to feed the furnace. Hence the need for 4 lines to feed all the different bunkers.

There are a few other sections where conveyors are 3 or 4 lines wide though, most of the route to the sinterworks for example. There are a few more shots in My redcar Dust till Dawn thread http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/redcar-steelworks-dawn-till-dusk.t100649

That's actually the top of the ore blending bunkers (of baked bean fame) and those conveyors are the feeds to the carriages that move back and forwards between bunkers.

The main conveyor runs are mostly doubles and singles.

Nice work getting this covered in the day. I was reading the signing in sheets in the admin offices and there's still 15-20 people working on the blast furnace every day!

If I was in your position and didn't drive, I'd of definitely called a taxi, although the miles of conveyors kept you fit no doubt. Anyway, good on you for visiting during the day. I'll be heading back soon... at night.
