The city started life as a mining town in the mountains of california in the 1850's, but as the mining decline so did the population until the 1940s when the town became virtually deserted.
Since then the nationanal parks service has preseved the town in a state of 'arrested decay' meaning the structural integrity of the buildings is preserves but their intereriors remain the same since they were abandoned.Unfortunately this means there is no access to the buildings but the interiors are all well viewed through windows.
