A culvert dating back over 130 years carrying the Markeaton brook underneath the city of Derby and connecting to the river Derwent at its outfall.

Towards the outfall we came across and followed the CSO for as far as we could until it came to a dead end with a gap into it, There was an off shoot around low stooping height which at this point we coudln't be bothered following any further also the smell from the gap in the CSO was rather offputting.

A good place for an easy Sunday stroll with the camera, as with most drains there always seems to be some wildlife hiding away but this place was like walking through a zoo!Crayfish, lots of river fish, bats, migies, a rogue goose that we managed to cheer on, a large rat and as we were leaving there was the sound of speedy footsteps racing towards us from behind which when we managed to get a torch onit it looked to be an otter or an un godly sized rat.

Fab photos! I was walking past the outfall a few months back and saw a mink nesting near between it and the bridge, your description of the otter/big rat makes me think its probably that.
