For our first post on this forum we would like to show you a lovely old church in Breightmet, Bolton that has finally disappeared. This is an excerpt from the Bolton Evening News:-

"A Methodist movement can be traced back to 1810 in Breightmet. Followers of the cause would meet in a local cottage. A growing following led to the church being built in 1848. It was a chapel which also doubled up as a Sunday School and would teach the poor to read and write through learning about the bible.

In 1907, the chapel was extended to form the main part of the church as it is today. It was again extended in 1930. But now, dry rot and disrepair—partly caused by vandalism—mean it is too costly to repair. The church unfortunately missed out on a regeneration grant because it was 50 yards outside the boundary area.

But Mr Broadbent said: “It is the people who make the church, not the building.”

Plans for the building are still being drawn up, but church leaders are hoping to preserve the stained glass windows, which was donated by the Leigh-Bramwell family, who were benefactors of the church."

How the building once looked:-

You tried the factory a bit further up? Been in there a few times. Worth a wander if you're in the area.
