Visited with Scotty/Rookinella. This was one we'd had on the list on for a while but never really figured out a plan on how to access the place. It had been well sealed for quite a while before our attempts. It took quite a bit of planing and multiple visits but eventually we nailed it. We had no idea what would be inside, knowing its mixed uses over the years we thought it may all be cleared back out and just an empty train tunnel awaited us. Thankfully not the case.

Bridge Valley Deep Shelter started out life as a railway tunnel for the ill fated Bristol Port and Pier Railway which ran up to just under the Clifton Suspension Bridge. In the 1930’s the railway was removed due to expansion of what is now the busy A4 portway road into Bristol. The tunnel remained disused till the advent of the 2nd world war when it, along with the Clifton Rocks Railway tunnel, found use as air raid shelters. Later in life it became used, in part, by the Bristol handgun club. When new handgun laws came into effect in the club ceased and the tunnel has remained dormant every since.

A few years after this visit the tunnel became somewhat of a major problem for the council - the road directly above - Bridge Valley Road - suffered from subsideance. In part caused by the tunnel below. The road which was a main artery to Clifton was closed for over two years while they carried out extensive works on the rock face and also the tunnel. As a result the tunnel was completely stripped back to its bare railway tunnel orgins and everything inside of quite a historical nature lost. I was glad to see this even its somewhat depleted state. With power still inside it'd have made a rather great party venue!
