This mast has been a landmark here for years, apparently it is now non-operational but would cost too much to dismantle! I have driven past a few times and my is it a huge fucker. Been meaning to return to it during the day time to see if it would be climbable. Anyone on here ever climbed it or thought about doing it? Shots from the top would be insane.

This was one of the parts of the BACKBONE system I think. Their siting near places like Kelvedon Hatch, Bawburgh or Shipton is not just coincidental, as the system was originally conceived to connect the GCI ROTOR stations to the national defence network. They were built to withdstand a nuclear detonation in close proximity, hence the heavyweight construction

Mate get back up it quickly. You have the chance to be the first and as a new member, that's pretty epic.

If not, some other sod like me will have it done by the end of the weekend. Hint hint ;)

Yeah i really really want to do it, the only thing is should i be concerned for if this thing is still giving off microwaves and stuff? As far as i've been told it's been decommissioned, but who knows for sure. Me and a friend went to a mast not far from us up in langdon hills near basildon, no where near as big as this one, but it was still active, we could hear everything going still, couldn't climb as the ladder was well sealed off, but we started to feel a bit funny so we left, then obviously i read up about these things, and quite clearly they're not good for you at all lol!

Hardly, it's not used

couldn't climb as the ladder was well sealed off
Many of them are, climb the structure, they are like ladders anyway

we started to feel a bit funny so we left
You will do mate, lot's of radiation etc kicking about

I think too much ignorance surrounds these things, put it this way I WON'T be going up anymore, I value my health (whats left of it)

Even if it was still transmitting you would be safe climbing the ladder or structure. You would have to stand in front of the dish directly in the middle of the beam... which will be less than 10mm in 'width' so pretty hard to get hit by unless you can levitate like superman!

Anyway it'd not do any damage to you as they aren't anywhere near the same power as a 'microwave oven', only slightly more powerful than the mobile phone you hold next to your head! You could stand infront of the microwave beam for hours and not notice any ill health what-so-ever.

Edit: Now if it were a radar installation it might be a different matter!
