Hi there to all,

I had a conversation last night with my father about the TV Centre in London, he states that there are two bunkers at TV Centre.
the first is a small one located near the main Plant Rooms. The second is larger and is located under the main atrium and entrance way.

Can any one else confirm if they have heard any similar rumours ?

It would make sense that it would have at least one , and considering it was built in the 1960`s at the height of cold war building I would be suprised if it didnt have one .

any info would be great ,

Thanks

I haven't heard or read anything, but I'd put money on it that there would be the mother of all emergency broadcasting bunkers under there.

It certainly would make sense,

I should have said in my OP, my father used to work for the MOD, that is how he came upon the info,
and before people jump on me , no he wasnt anything fancy just worked for the estates dept side of the MOD.
he has told me of others in the past ,( always after they were de-comissioned or about to be sold).

I have a friend at the beeb - bribery with beer may be in order

That would be great Styru,

I am hoping to speak to my father about it again , but he is not too well with the flu at the moment ,
and he is 81 so it has hit him hard. but as soon as he is well enough I will talk to him some more.

Possible. I have a journo friend that told me not long ago that there's a huge BBC underground bunker complex in Worcestershire, constructed in 1960s. Would they build two bunkers during cold war for same purpose? It might be irrelevant, just thought it would broaden info.

On a side note, last news broadcast from Television Centre is 1pm tomorrow, all BBC TV and radio has moved to New Broadcasting House.

The official bunker is at Wood Norton, as mentioned by Cawkii above. Also, most if not all RGHQs and Burlington had BBC facilities.

I'd be very surprised if there wasn't something underneath the TV Centre.

Hi,

There is at least one bunker, under the building behind Studio 2 (there is a tower block in the same block) where the interior shots of Red Dwarf were filmed.

Source: I was there yesterday on an official/unofficial tour.

Wood Norton Hall was the BBC Academy and one building remains called the Bredon Wing which is built into the side of a hill with a nuclear bunker under it complete with replacement broadcasting mast.

It would not surprise me if the BBC Centre had at least a hardened studio as well.

Edited to add

Even the BBC's new multi-million pound television news studio has been built to be bomb proof to protect journalists from suicide attacks.
